How long carpet takes to dry after cleaning
Hot water extraction, the method most people call steam cleaning, leaves carpet damp for hours. Low-moisture methods dry in under an hour, but they clean less of the pile: bonnet cleaning reaches only the top, Angi notes.
Short answer
Usually 8 to 24 hours after hot water extraction, by Stanley Steemer’s estimate; HomeAdvisor says about 24 hours after steam cleaning, which is the same method. Bonnet cleaning dries in about 30 minutes and dry cleaning in about 20, on HomeAdvisor’s figures. Fans, and air conditioning or heat depending on the season, speed it up. Carpet still wet after 24 to 48 hours risks mold, the EPA warns.
How long each method takes to dry
Drying time follows the water: the more a method puts into the carpet, the longer the carpet stays damp.
| Method | Drying time | Whose figure |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water extraction, or “steam cleaning” | 8 to 24 hours | Stanley Steemer |
| Steam cleaning | About 24 hours | HomeAdvisor |
| Hot carbonating extraction | 1 to 2 hours | Chem-Dry, for its own process |
| Bonnet cleaning | About 30 minutes | HomeAdvisor |
| Dry cleaning | About 20 minutes | HomeAdvisor |
The fiber matters too. HomeAdvisor says cotton carpet takes 6 to 12 hours to dry, and that some wool carpet is slow to dry and better kept away from liquids.
How to help carpet dry faster
- Run fans in the cleaned rooms, as Stanley Steemer advises
- Turn on the air conditioning or the heat, whichever suits the season
- When the air is humid, run a dehumidifier or the air conditioning: the EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50
- Leave the blocks under furniture legs, and the paper under upholstered pieces, until the carpet and the furniture are completely dry; Stanley Steemer says this prevents color transfer
Can you walk on damp carpet?
Stanley Steemer says carpet can be walked on right after it is cleaned, but not in outdoor shoes, which would soil it again; it suggests clean rubber-soled shoes instead. Keep the traffic light until it dries, and wipe up anything spilled at once.
When damp carpet becomes a problem
Carpet that stays wet too long can grow mold. The EPA advises drying water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent it, and notes that mold can grow unseen on the underside of carpet and pad. A carpet still wet the day after a cleaning needs more airflow, and a call to the cleaner.
Planning around the drying
Book the cleaning a day ahead of anything that needs the room: guests, a move-out walk-through, listing photos. A morning appointment gives the carpet the rest of the day, and fans can run overnight. When there is no day to spare, ask for a low-moisture method, accepting that it cleans less of the pile. Moving out? See what a landlord may deduct for carpet.
