The houses
The City’s 2011 Westside survey found that most properties were built between 1920 and 1930, and that most are single-family worker cottages on small lots carved out of larger farm parcels, with a few bungalow courts from the 1920s and 1930s among them.
What floors here go through
Cottages built for oil workers have small rooms, which changes the arithmetic: a three-bedroom cottage might have 400 square feet of carpet, which costs less by the square foot than by the room. Ask for both prices. In a cottage this age, look under the carpet before deciding what to clean: there may be original wood.

Oil shaped the Westside. The survey dates the first discovery along Ventura Avenue to 1885, when crews drilling for water struck oil instead, and the cottages that fill the neighborhood were built for the people who worked the field.
